Cukruotas Imbieras/ Candied Ginger

Pagal/Source PingsPickings

Produktai:

Jauno imbiero šaknis
Cukrus
Vanduo

Gaminimo procesas:

It is true that, from hate to love is just one step. Or the other way round.. Anyway ..

I hated ginger! I can sincerely admit that just a few years ago I was not using it anywhere.

I think the reason was just that I didn't know how to use it and what to do with it. I tried few times, but I hated the taste, so after that didn't even bother to use ginger.

However, ginger is now always in our refrigerator and I should thank my husband who taught me first how to make tea with ginger. Then I started using it in Indian recipes.

And now it's time for the next step! Sweets ginger treats.

I was had candied ginger long time back, but I was not impressed, but once I found recipe in Ping's blog for the home made candied ginger, I decided to try and I loved it!

Some people would say that it is cheaper and easier to buy candied ginger. But I prefer to make something like that at home, at least, I know how long ago I made it and it is without any preservatives that usually are added to extend its shelf life.

Products:

Young ginger root
Sugar
Water

Method:

Peel the ginger and cut into small pieces. If a ginger is older(the root of the higher and with more fiber) cut into smaller pieces.

Place ginger pieces into the pan, add water to cover the ginger and cook over medium-low heat for about 30-45 minutes or until the pieces are soft.

Drain the ginger, preserve 4 tablespoons of the liquid. Weigh the ginger and place it back into the pan, add as many grams of sugar as there was ginger, add 4 tablespoons of preserved water. Bring it to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer on the low heat until the ginger is translucent and syrup is reduced. This takes about 45 minutes-1 hour.

Drain the ginger, preserve the syrup for the ginger beer (the recipe will be posted soon). Place candied ginger pieces sheet of a baking paper separating each other so they wouldn't stick together. Allow to dry (just like in the original recipe I left over night).

It is recommended to keep it in the refrigerator.

  1. O man naminis skanesnis jau vien tuo, kad galiu susipjaustyti tokio storumo gabalėliais, kokiais noriu - parduotuviniai gi... Milžiniški! Ir, bent jau man, per cukriniai..
Žavuoliai taviškiai. Et, pasiilgau kristalizuoto imbiero, nors tu ką :)

  2. There is not a whole lot of recipes out there using candied ginger, which is probably why I have never tried it. As far as making it on your own, I am sure that it yields better taste than store bought and saves some money. I am curious now to see what you create with this. Hope you are enjoying the weekend!
